How To Maintain And Take Care Of Your Denim Clothes

Hello Everyone…

As I’ve mentioned before on this blog, and like most of us already know, denim is a very important staple fashion piece that will never go out of style. It is something that is prominent in every lady’s closet; whether its denim trousers, skirts, shorts, gowns or jackets, we all own denim.

Due to how versatile and important it has come to be in our fashion, it is important that we take good care of our denim clothes so that they last longer and stay in good condition for a long time. Denim requires special care in order for us to use it to it’s fullest, which is why today, I’ll be sharing a few tips on how to maintain and care for your denim clothes so that you can enjoy it for as long as you want.

Proper care of denim avoids early wash off (fading), tear, looseness etc. So read on for tips on how to maintain and take care of your denim clothes.

1. Wash Less

One of the important things we need to know is that washing of denim frequently is not advisable. It reduces the quality of the material and promotes fading of the color. That doesn’t mean we won’t wash it, we just need to wash it less frequently than our other clothes. To keep it clean, we can remove spots by brushing them off with a damp cloth, a small toothbrush or a soft sponge to get stains off.

2. Lean More Towards Handwashing

Denim or jeans material is delicate and requires special care. Which is why experts have advised that hand washing is more beneficial than using a washing machine. It preserves the material and helps it last longer. So whenever you can, use hands to wash your denim instead of a washing machine. I personally have never liked washing denim with my hands because it is quite stressful. However since our washing machine got bad, I’ve learned to just get used to it and I’m sure you can too, for the longer benefit.

3. Use Cold Water To Wash

Hot water is known to fade denim and cause shrinkage of denim materials. So the better option is using cold or lukewarm water to prevent the fading and shrinkage. That will help keep your clothes in good shape and make it last longer.

4. Avoid Dryers

Experts have said the best way to dry your denim is by air drying. This is because the heat from machine dryers causes shrinkage. It also damages the elasticity of the clothes and makes it loose, which will make your cloth ill-fitting. To prevent that from happening, we should all air dry our denims. Dryers are faster, but air drying is more helpful.

5. Avoid Bleach And Detergents With Bleach

Bleach is well known to cause the fading off of colored clothing. This is the case for denim also. To avoid discolorations and fading, we need to completely avoid using bleach or detergents with bleach in it to wash denim. This is for those who use a washing machine for their denim. For those who wash by hand, a mild bar soap is more advisable.

6. Wash With Similar Colors

A lot of denim bleeds color when wet. Which is why we need to be careful of the clothes we wash together with it. First of all, the denim can bleed and stain your other clothes which can totally damage it, and it can also be stained itself. That is why we need to sort our denim out and wash it with like or similar colors. For example, a white denim and a dark blue denim should not be washed together because there is a high chance the white denim will be ruined.

7. Turn It Inside Out Before Placing It In The Washing Machine

This is important because the surface of denims is quite delicate and needs to be handled with care. To prevent the surface of the denim from reacting to the harshness of the detergent, it is best to turn it inside out before washing. This preserves the quality and color of the material.

8. Always Search Your Pockets For Things Like Tissue

There was a day I dumped my jeans trouser in a bucket of water about to wash. Next thing I know, I see pieces of tissue floating in the water and sticking to the jeans. Apparently i had left it in one of the pockets. It was a hassle getting them off and I had to wash it twice for it to come off completely. To avoid this from happening to you, you need to always check your pockets for things like that which might damage your cloth or stick to it which can be very annoying.

So those are just a few tips I’m sure you will find very helpful in taking care of your denims.
